Acne Skin Care: Exfoliation Tips for Oily, Acne Skin
So you’ve heard about the importance of exfoliating your oily,
acne skin but you’re wondering okay, where do I begin? How do I
know what’s right and will work with my oily, acne skin?
Here are some general exfoliation tips for acne skin to get you
started in the right direction:
Tip 1: Consider your skin Everyone’s skin is unique, and has
different needs. You should first consider your skin’s history
with regards to acne skin care products. What’s worked well?
What hasn’t? Is your oily, acne problem mild or severe? Are you
under the professional care of a physician or doctor? If so, you
should follow his or her advice first. By answering these
questions first, you can narrow down what level of intensity of
a product, either mild or strong, and the associated application
method you should use, professional or over-the-counter. As a
general rule, if you have acne blemishes and breakouts, avoid
any products that contain abrasive particles and ingredients
such as those found in scrubs as they can cause further
irritation of the acne skin. For oil reduction, products
containing beta-hydroxy acids such salicylic acid have been
found to be very effective. Tip 2: Purchase samples A good rule
of thumb is to try out the products first by purchasing samples.
Most skin care companies offer samples at a small cost for this
very purpose. This way you are not making a big investment and
you can, on a trial basis test if the products are going to be
effective with your oily, acne skin. Start small and remember
that the most expensive products may not necessarily be the most
effective for your individual acne skin care needs.
Tip 3: Exfoliate Weekly For best results, remember to exfoliate
at least once a week, and depending on your skin and level of
intensity of the exfoliant product and your acne problem, no
more than twice a week. For most people and for most products,
1-2 times a week is sufficient. The most common mistake people
with acne skin tend to make is to exfoliate too often because
they experience favorable results and think that more will be
even better. However, the truth is more is not better. Over
exfoliation can cause further skin irritation, and increased
redness and sensitivity and even reverse the desired results.
Have a regular weekly routine and be consistent, but don’t over
do it.
